Proper Steps:

Stand on one leg about 1.5 to 2 feet in front of a box/bench set at knee height 
Place your rear leg on the box with your laces down 
Maintaining tall posture, squat over your lead leg until your rear knee is about an inch off of the ground 
Make sure your rear knee is lined up below your hip at the bottom of the squat 
Aim to maintain a lead shin angle parallel to your spine
