Proper Steps:

Stand in a split stance, with your feet about shoulder width apart 
Maintaining a tall spine with a braced core, lower your body until your knee is about an inch above the floor 
Ensure that your rear knee is stacked below your hips and your lead shin angle is parallel to your spine when at the bottom
