Proper Steps:

Grip the center of a barbell with both hands, palms facing inward
Hold the BB above one shoulder with your elbow tucked underneath your wrist, so that your posture is perpendicular to the bar
Press the barbell up and over your head, to the other shoulder and complete the rep on the other side
