Adult Group Swim Lessons

 

These 45 minute group lessons are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year and summer months.  We offer beginning and intermediate group swim lessons.  Beginning group lessons are focused on learning the basic skills to achieve a minimum level of water competency.  Intermediate group lessons are designed for teens and adults who want to improve their skills and strokes.

Women's Only Swim Lessons 

 

These 45 minute group lessons are offered to women on Monday and Wednesdays throughout the school year. Youth Group Swim Lessons 

 

Youth Group Swim Lessons will begin again in Spring 2018.

 

Youth swim lessons are available for SRC Members and their dependents. This program is designed to teach participants how to swim and how to be safe in and around the water.  Class sizes are set to meet the Red Cross standard of six participants to one instructor. Class levels are designed to group participants with similar abilities and skills in order to best learn the required skills.  Classes included in this program are: Parent and Child Aquatics (ages: six months to three years old), Preschool Aquatics (ages: four and five) and Learn-to-Swim Levels 1-6 (ages: six and up).  All group swim lessons are 30 minutes long, with the exception of Level 5/6, which are 45 minutes long.

You must be a SRC Member to register for Youth Group Swim Lessons. SRC Members will use their Cougar Card for facility access and the youth will be checked in on a roster for each lesson. Youth Group Swim Lesson registration is completed online only through the UREC website and will show up as available for purchase, if you are an SRC member. These lessons are not available for purchase for non-members.  

 

Private Swim Lessons

 

Private and semi-private buddy lessons are available upon request for anyone over the age of 3 (three).  These lessons can be set up around your schedule, and are customized to fit your goals and needs.  Private and semi-private buddy lessons are available for youth and adults. Private lessons are 30 minutes in length.

Registration for Private Swim Lessons can be done in the main office of the WSU Student Recreation Center between the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

 

Non-members can purchase private swim lessons but must purchase a Day Pass or 10-Punch Day to access the facility for each private lesson.

 

** Please note that no swim lessons take place on September 5 (Labor Day) or November 11 (Veterans Day)

Adult Beginner Swim Lessons

Learning the Basics. These lessons will help you learn how to be comfortable and active in the water. You will learn how to float, submerge completely, propel yourself through the water on the front and back, and begin to learn the basics of the front and back crawl strokes. All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 45 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. Improving Skills and Swimming Strokes You will learn and improve proficiency in basic aquatic skills and the six basic swimming strokes. These lessons will teach you how to become a more efficient and effective swimmer. You will also learn how to be safe in and around the water. All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 45 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. Prerequisites: You must be comfortable in chest-deep water, able to put your face in the water, and able to perform 15 yards of the front crawl, breast stroke and back crawl. Parent & Child Swim Lessons. The American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics program builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. Parents/guardians and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more. Once children can perform basic skills without parental assistance, they may begin independent Preschool courses (ages 4 and 5).All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 30 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. SRC Members will use their Cougar Card for facility access and the youth will be checked in on a roster for each lesson. Everyone regardless of member status will check in their child at the Student Recreation Membership Desk. Preschool Swim Lessons Session 1

Children will learn how to enter and exit the water, in addition to learning breath control, retrieval of submerged objects, floating on the front and back, treading and an introduction to swimming on the front. Prerequisites: Child must be at least 4 years old. There are no prerequisites for this level. All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 30 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. SRC Members will use their Cougar Card for facility access and the youth will be checked in on a roster for each lesson. Everyone regardless of member status will check in their child at the Student Recreation Membership Desk. Youth must be supervised directly on the pool deck by their parent/legal guardian during the entire lesson. All youth must have a youth waiver signed by their parent/legal guardian to enter the facility. Youth Swim Lessons: Level 1 & 2 Session 1

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills. Orients participants to the aquatic environment and helps them to gain basic aquatic skills. Participants will learn how to enter and exit the water, in addition to learning breath control, retrieval of submerged objects, floating on the front and back, hand movements for treading in chest-deep water and an introduction to swimming on the front. Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills. Builds on basic aquatic skills and water safety concepts learned in Level 1. Participants will learn how to fully submerge, open their eyes and retrieve submerged objects in chest-deep water. In addition, participants will learn how to float in a face-down position and improve distance of front and back glides. At this level, participants will begin to develop combined arm and leg actions on the front and back. Prerequisites: Participant should be 6 years or older. Successful demonstration of the Level 1 exit skills assessment. Learning the Basics. These lessons will help you learn how to be comfortable and active in the water. You will learn how to float, submerge completely, propel yourself through the water on the front and back, and begin to learn the basics of the front and back crawl strokes. All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 45 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. Improving Skills and Swimming Strokes You will learn and improve proficiency in basic aquatic skills and the six basic swimming strokes. These lessons will teach you how to become a more efficient and effective swimmer. You will also learn how to be safe in and around the water. All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 45 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. Prerequisites: You must be comfortable in chest-deep water, able to put your face in the water, and able to perform 15 yards of the front crawl, breast stroke and back crawl. Parent & Child Swim Lessons. The American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics program builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water. Parents/guardians and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more. Once children can perform basic skills without parental assistance, they may begin independent Preschool courses (ages 4 and 5).All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 30 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. SRC Members will use their Cougar Card for facility access and the youth will be checked in on a roster for each lesson. Everyone regardless of member status will check in their child at the Student Recreation Membership Desk. Preschool Swim Lessons Session 3

Preschool Swim Lessons. Familiarizes children ages 4 and 5 with the aquatic environment while helping to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around the water. Children will learn how to enter and exit the water, in addition to learning breath control, retrieval of submerged objects, floating on the front and back, treading and an introduction to swimming on the front. Prerequisites: Child must be at least 4 years old. There are no prerequisites for this level. All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 30 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. SRC Members will use their Cougar Card for facility access and the youth will be checked in on a roster for each lesson. Everyone regardless of member status will check in their child at the Student Recreation Membership Desk. Youth must be supervised directly on the pool deck by their parent/legal guardian during the entire lesson. All youth must have a youth waiver signed by their parent/legal guardian to enter the facility. Youth Swim Lessons: Level 1 & 2 Session 3

Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills. Orients participants to the aquatic environment and helps them to gain basic aquatic skills. Participants will learn how to enter and exit the water, in addition to learning breath control, retrieval of submerged objects, floating on the front and back, hand movements for treading in chest-deep water and an introduction to swimming on the front. Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills. Builds on basic aquatic skills and water safety concepts learned in Level 1. Participants will learn how to fully submerge, open their eyes and retrieve submerged objects in chest-deep water. In addition, participants will learn how to float in a face-down position and improve distance of front and back glides. At this level, participants will begin to develop combined arm and leg actions on the front and back. Prerequisites: Participant should be 6 years or older. Successful demonstration of the Level 1 exit skills assessment. All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 30 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. Level 3 - Stroke Development. Builds on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water competency. Participants will be introduced to the front crawl, elementary backstroke, scissor kick, breaststroke kick, and treading in deep water. Prerequisites: Participant should be 6 years or older. Successful demonstration of the Level 2 exit skills assessment. Level 4 - Stroke Improvement. These lessons will improve participants’ proficiency in performing the swimming strokes (front crawl and elementary backstroke) that were introduced in Level 3. Participants will also learn breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, back crawl, and open turns. Prerequisites: Participant should be 6 years or older. Successful demonstration of the Level 3 exit skills assessment. All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 30 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. You must be a SRC Member to register for Youth Group Swim Lessons. SRC Members will use their Cougar Card for facility access and the youth will be checked in on a roster for each lesson. Level 5/6 - Stroke Refinement and Skill Proficiency. Helps to refine performance of all six swimming strokes (front crawl, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke) so participants can swim with greater efficiency and effectiveness over longer distances. Participants will also refine open-turns and learn how to do flip-turns while swimming. Prerequisites: Participant should be 6 years or older.
