Challenge Course Facilitator Training Level 1 (High & Low Course)

Training dates are: Friday, October 6, 5-9pm Saturday, October 7, 9am-5pm Sunday, October 8, 9am-5pm Friday, October 27, 5-9pm Saturday, October 28, 9am-5pm Sunday, October 29, 9am-5pm All sessions must be attended in their entirety. The Challenge Course Facilitator Level I (site specific) training is designed for anyone who wants to know more about facilitation. This training is in accordance with the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) standards and covers frontloading, debriefing, sequencing of activities, and selected theories. The technical skills covered in this training include spotting, belaying, rescues, and gear inspections. At the end of this training, you will have a wide repertoire of activities that you can either lead on or off the challenge course. The last day of the course includes testing. Attendance is required on all days. Participants who successfully complete the training and testing will be offered a certificate of completion. This training is not a guarantee for employment with the UREC Challenge Program. If hired after successful completion of training and interviewing, our facilitators benefit from a great deal of professional development and personal growth. Facilitators can expect to hone their skills in group management and leadership, effective communication, guiding meaningful discussions, rapport-building, and developing confidence in themselves and others. Intro to Lead Clinic

Are you getting comfortable top-roping, and want to learn a new skill that you can apply outside? Lead climbing is the method of climbing where you clip your rope into protection as you ascend, rather than being belayed through one anchor at the top of the climb (top roping). In this clinic we’ll teach you the skills needed to effectively lead climb and belay. The clinic will be instructional and have open time for students to practice skills they have been taught and skills they already know. Harness, shoes, and belay devices will all be provided. Program rating is level 3: Participants must have a belay qualification through the WSU SRC Climbing Wall, and have a strong base knowledge of roped climbing methods and systems. For those patrons who would like to take the qualification test without the clinic, we will provide you with that opportunity early in the clinic to make best use of your time. Lake Coeur d'Alene Bike and Camp

Spend 2 days biking alongside Lake Coeur d’Alene where you’ll learn bike touring fundamentals and basic camping skills. The Trail of the Coeur d'Alene follows the Union Pacific Railroad traversing along the lake reaching the Montana border. Each day you’ll travel an average of 35 miles. Worried about carrying gear? We’ll haul the equipment for you in our support vehicle, giving you an opportunity to fully take in the ride and scenery. Trip Rating is level 2. This trip is designed for all levels of cyclists, but you must be able to ride a bicycle with little effort. Trip costs includes equipment, transportation, permits, Adventure Facilitator and bicycle and helmet if needed (Food is NOT included). The mandatory pre-trip meeting will take place September 26th from 6:00-9:00pm at the Outdoor Recreation Center. Cancellation Policy: In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and transportation logistics, ORC trips are often programmed for small groups (typically up to 6 participants with 2 facilitators). Sunset Paddle Board Yoga

Located only 30 minutes from WSU’s campus, the Snake River is perhaps one of the most well-known and scenic rivers in the entire United States. Come enjoy this beautiful river as you watch the sun set. Participants will learn basic yoga moves that they will try from their own stand up paddle board as it is anchored in the water. Whether you are an experienced paddle boarder or you have never been on a paddle board before, this trip will be a great experience! This is one of our most popular and well-liked trips- so register early! Trip rating is level 1. No experience is necessary. Trip cost includes; paddle board rental, transportation, and an Adventure Facilitator (food is NOT included so bring a snack and some water). This trip runs rain or shine. Women's Backpacking

In this backpacking trip, you’ll travel to northern Idaho to explore the magnificent Selkirk Mountains and Priest Lake area! This area home to rugged granite peaks topping 7,000 feet in elevation, spectacular Priest Lake, mountain streams, and plentiful wildlife. You’ll learn backcountry camping and travel skills such as how to purify your drinking water, how to cook on a backpacking stove, and how to hike/camp utilizing “Leave No Trace” principles. Trip rating is level 2. Good physical conditioning is needed, no experience necessary. Participants can expect to hike anywhere between 3-12 miles per day with an overnight backpack on. The mandatory pre-trip meeting will take place on September 26th, from 6:00-8:00pm in the SRC Classroom. We will be mainly using our indoor facility, the Chinook Student Center. So, expect more traditional CrossFit workouts with pullups, toes to bar, wallballs, etc. We also have an outdoor turfed area and a track nearby, so sled pushes and sprints are also a possibility. This is the Rx Men's division. If signing up in this division, you should be able to complete the following: Double Unders Chin over the bar Pullups Toes to Bar Squat cleans at least 135lbs Snatches at at least 95lbs Deadlifts at at least 225 Championships will likely include muscle ups and/or rope climbs. Climbing Conditioning will meets once a week for a one and a half hour session. The course will include introductory and intermediate level coaching on climbing movement. Spend two days learning how to bikepack through the scenic Palouse hills. Saturday you will meet at the ORC and begin your travel to Kamiak Butte where the group will set-up camp for that evening. Sunday the group will have the option to hike to the top of Kamiak Butte before peddling back to Pullman. Worried about how you’ll carry gear? We’ll provide all the necessary equipment to outfit your bike to ensure a comfortable ride. Trip Rating is level 2. Travel with the ORC for an unforgettable Thanksgiving break experience in one of our nation’s most beautiful and popular National Parks! Come with us to visit and experience one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. At one mile deep, 277 miles long, and up to 18 miles wide, this area is sure to provide inspiring views, and never-to-be-forgotten moments. You’ll backpack for 3 nights, and spend 2 nights camping on the canyon rim, all while learning about the amazing natural and human history of the area. Trip rating is level 2. Good physical conditioning is needed, no experience necessary. Participants can expect to hike anywhere between 3-12 miles per day with an overnight backpack on.
