[Sa] 12:00 a.m. - 11:59 p.m.
[Su] 12:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
$185 - $225

This 3-day instructional climb teaches you some of the basics of glacier mountaineering, including self-arrest training, as well as glacier and rope techniques while ascending this beautiful giant of the Cascades. We'll be traveling as high as Camp Muir, which at 10,000 feet, is the most popular base camp for climbers making a bid for the summit. On this climb, you'll get a taste of the alpine climbing experience, take in extravagant views and get up close and personal with Washington's highest peak! With a 3:1 climber to facilitator ratio, we offer a very personal experience from seasoned and knowledgeable adventure facilitators. (Please read remainder of the trip description for IMPORTANT information) A certain level of fitness is necessary in order for the group to reach its camp at the top of the Muir snowfield (8 miles, 4640 feet of elevation gain, and a 10,080 foot high-point). It’s recommended that at the time of the climb, you have the level of fitness to be able to run 5 miles at a 10 minute mile pace (or a comparable equivalent). This is not a prerequisite, or requirement, but we believe that you and the rest of the group will have a better chance for an enjoyable experience if you were at that level when we started our climb. Due to the tight timeline this trip will be departing no later than 4:00pm on Thursday September 7th. Please make arrangements so you are able to depart at this time. A mandatory pre-trip meeting will take place at the ORC on August 29th from 6pm-9pm. For your attendance on this trip it is required that you attend. Trip rating is level 3. This trip will be physically challenging and strenuous; a moderate to high level of fitness is required for this program. While no mountaineering experience is required, experience backpacking and traveling in a winter environment are strongly preferred. Trip cost includes: group gear, transportation, permits, and Adventure Facilitators. Food, clothing, and mountaineering boots are NOT included. Gear requirements for mountaineering are lengthy. The ORC will be providing ropes, harnesses, helmets, headlamps, tents, sleeping bags and other group gear. Appropriate clothing and footwear (mountaineering boots) is required and not provided by the Outdoor Recreation Center. Please let us know if this is an issue so we can help in whatever way we can. Cancellation Policy: In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and transportation logistics, ORC trips are often programmed for small groups (typically up to 6 participants with 2 facilitators). Late cancellations can seriously impact our ability to accommodate others and recover costs. • Cancellations made up until 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline will receive a full refund. • Cancellations made within 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline receive 50% refund. • Sorry, no refunds are given past the registration deadline. Pre-Requisite: Prior experience backpacking with a heavy load and traveling in a winter environment is highly preferred. During the Pretrip meeting participants are required to bring all of their equipment (including mountaineering boots, unless renting) to ensure that all equipment is appropriate for the program.

This multi-day expedition-style kayak tour along the 28-mile, glacially carved Slocan Lake, provides paddlers (novice and experienced alike) the opportunity to experience some of British Columbia’s most stunning scenery from the cockpit of their kayak. This trip will give you the chance to advance your kayaking skills, see new places, and forge new friendships. Where we’re going, we don’t need roads. Surrounded by lush, forested hills and the dramatic Valhalla Mountains to the west, Slocan Lake is a top-notch destination without the crowds common in more accessible parks. Most of our paddling will take place along the rugged, roadless, mostly wilderness, western shoreline. The crystal clear waters of this fjord lake allow paddlers to see their shadows 20 feet deep. Ancient pictographs may be spotted along the rocky shoreline. Participants can expect to learn and practice the following kayak skills with experienced facilitators: • Lifting, Carrying, Launching and Landing • Efficient Forward Paddling • Reverse Paddling and Stopping • Moving the Kayak Sideways • Preventing Capsize • Bracing • Turning As we will be traveling through well-known grizzly bear country, we will have ample opportunities to learn and practice Leave No Trace skills to minimize our impact on the environment. Participants will receive an official Leave No Trace Awareness certificate for participation in this program. For entry into Canada, all participants must have a current passport and no DUI/DWI’s on their record. On this trip we’ll depart Friday (early afternoon), get on the water Saturday morning, camp along the lake Saturday and Sunday night, and travel back to Pullman on Monday. We may have opportunities for a hike into the Valhalla Provincial Park. Sign up early and get $25 off your registration. Participants who register in the first 30 days will pay a discounted price of $150 for members and $250 for non-members. On May 1st, registration will return to its original cost of $175 for members and $275 for non-members. Trip rating is level 2. No kayaking experience necessary!
