Lead Clinic

$5

Are you getting comfortable top-roping, and want to learn a new skill that you can apply outside? Lead climbing is the method of climbing where you clip your rope into protection as you ascend, rather than being belayed through one anchor at the top of the climb (top roping). In this clinic we’ll teach you the skills needed to effectively lead climb and belay. The clinic will be instructional and have open time for students to practice skills they have been taught and skills they already know. Harness, shoes, and belay devices will all be provided. Program rating is level 3: Participants must have a belay qualification through the WSU SRC Climbing Wall, and have a strong base knowledge of roped climbing methods and systems. Spring Break: Glen Canyon Kayak Tour

Mar 10 - Mar 19 in ORC Lobby
[F] 2:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.
$425 - $600

For your next spring break, experience the southwest desert environment from the cockpit of a kayak. Join the ORC for this paddling adventure of a lifetime as we explore one of the premier flatwater kayaking destinations in the American West – Arizona and Utah’s Lake Powell (AKA Glen Canyon National Recreation Area). “The huge upside of Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River, nexus of an environmental battle lost a generation ago, is the emergence of its progeny, Lake Powell, as a supreme freshwater kayaking destination.” – National Geographic Sandwiched between two classic NW-SW road trips with camping gear and kayaks in tow, and a likely stopover at a national park such as Zion or Bryce Canyon, spend five days touring a slice of the narrow canyons and big open waters that span Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Without the summertime swarms of speedboats, spring is an ideal time to paddle Lake Powell, so long as you can handle some cold desert nights. In the heart of Southwest canyon country, this is a land of extremes. We will prepare ourselves for cold weather, water, wind, and waves, and paddle 10-15 miles each day as we search for a new beach to call home each night. But we won’t spend all of our time sitting in our self-propelled boats – Glen Canyon hosts a myriad of opportunities to set out on foot. Imagine paddling to the end of a narrow slot canyon, securing our boats, and hiking deep in canyon country. Given the duration and remoteness of this expedition, this trip is rated level 4, and is reserved for intermediate level paddlers (participants with previous kayak touring experience). If you have never kayaked before, please consider joining the ORC for any of our beginner-friendly kayak tours and/or clinics. If you have questions, please contact jmstahl@wsu.edu. Level 4 Good physical condition is required, specific experience is required, and technical proficiency is highly recommended. • We will be paddling on a massive and remote, cold lake with conditions that can change quickly. As such, previous kayaking experience is required. • This trip requires that participants are in good physical condition and are able to paddle 15 miles/day, hike, camp, and live in a cold weather environment for 5 consecutive days. If you have any questions, please consult your physician. • Participants must be able to demonstrate proficiency (after instruction and practice) in wet exits, re-entry, and T-rescues at mandatory pool session/pre-trip meeting. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting and pool session on March 2, 2017 from 5pm-10pm. Trip cost includes: kayaking and camping gear, transportation, permits/campsite fees, and adventure facilitators (food is NOT included). SRC/Chinook members who register by January 31st will pay a discounted price of $375.00. On February 1st registration will return to its original cost of $425.00. Cancellation Policy: In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and transportation logistics, ORC programs are designed for small groups (typically up to 6 participants with 2 facilitators). Late cancellations can seriously impact our ability to accommodate others and recover costs. • Cancellations made up until 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline will receive a full refund. • Cancellations made within 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline receive 50% refund. • Sorry, no refunds are given past the registration deadline.

Cascades Mountaineering

Apr 13 - Apr 16 in ORC Mt. Rainier, WA
[Thrs] 4:00 p.m. - 11:59 p.m.
[F] 12:00 a.m. - 11:59 p.m.
[Sa] 12:00 a.m. - 11:59 p.m.
[Su] 12:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
$185 - $225

This 3-day instructional climb teaches you some of the basics of glacier mountaineering, including self-arrest training, as well as glacier and rope techniques while ascending this beautiful giant of the Cascades. We'll be traveling as high as Camp Muir, which at 10,000 feet, is the most popular base camp for climbers making a bid for the summit. On this climb, you'll get a taste of the alpine climbing experience, take in extravagant views and get up close and personal with Washington's highest peak! With a 3:1 climber to facilitator ratio, we offer a very personal experience from seasoned and knowledgeable adventure facilitators. (Please read remainder of the trip description for IMPORTANT information). A certain level of fitness is necessary in order for the group to reach its camp at the top of the Muir snowfield (8 miles, 4640 feet of elevation gain, and a 10,080 foot high-point). It’s recommended that at the time of the climb, you have the level of fitness to be able to run 5 miles at a 10 minute mile pace (or a comparable equivalent). This is not a prerequisite, or requirement, but we believe that you and the rest of the group will have a better chance for an enjoyable experience if you were at that level when we start our climb. Due to the tight timeline this trip will be departing no later than 4:00pm on Thursday April 13th. Please make arrangements so you are able to depart at this time. A mandatory pre-trip meeting will take place at the ORC on April 4th from 6pm-9pm. Trip rating is level 3. This trip will be physically challenging and strenuous; a moderate to high level of fitness is required for this program. While no mountaineering experience is required, experience backpacking and traveling in a winter environment are strongly preferred. Trip cost includes: group gear, transportation, permits, and trip facilitators. Food, clothing, and mountaineering boots are NOT included. Gear requirements for mountaineering are lengthy. The ORC will be providing ropes, harnesses, helmets, headlamps, tents, sleeping bags and other group gear. Appropriate clothing and footwear (mountaineering boots) is required and not provided by the Outdoor Recreation Center. Please let us know if this is an issue so we can help in whatever way we can. Cancellation Policy: In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and transportation logistics, ORC trips are often programmed for small groups (typically up to 6 participants with 2 facilitators). Pre-Requisite: Prior experience backpacking with a heavy load and traveling in a winter environment is highly preferred. During the Pretrip meeting participants are required to bring all of their equipment (including mountaineering boots, unless renting) to ensure that all equipment is appropriate for the program.
