American Red Cross Lifeguarding Review Certification Course

This update course is to give currently certified lifeguards the opportunity to update skills to the newest American Red Cross Lifeguarding course content and renew certification. Successful participants will be re-certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid for 2 years. ***You will need to bring a copy of your current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification along with a valid government issued form of identification. These items will be verified by the instructor prior to the course starting. We can not submit a course record for your renewed certification without verifying your current certification. Please use the Youth Registration to enroll participants who are under the age of 18. Prerequisite: *Minimum age of 15 before the last day of the scheduled class. *Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Participants may use front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. *Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. *Tread water with hands under armpits for 2 minutes. Certification Requirements: Attend the entire course, participate in all skill sessions and scenarios, demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios, pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent. The practice sessions will require some strenuous physical activity. You are encouraged to check with your health-care professional before participating in the practice sessions. SWIM THE PAC 12!

Swim the Pac-12 is a challenge to motivate swimmers of all levels to move to the pools for fitness. Participants can water walk, aqua-jog, or swim their way through the challenge - the main point is to get in the water and enjoy the benefits of swimming! You have twelve weeks (January 22-April 13) to complete any of the routes through the Pac-12. Distances have been calculated based on general distances from campus to campus. Participants are responsible for logging their progress in the binders located at each pool. There are three routes to choose from: Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced. When participants register online by March 1 and track their distances on the sheets provided in each pool, they will receive a prize for each distance they complete. Participants will get a water bottle for the Beginner Stage, a mesh swim bag for the Intermediate Stage, and a cool UREC beach towel for completing the Advanced Stage. Advanced stage winners will also be entered into a drawing for a free semester session of Fitness Swimming!

Ready to sign up for CrossFit but are worried that you don't know the movements or aren't in shape yet? CrossFit Jump Start is just for you. Jump start is 5 days long, intended to immerse you in the world of CrossFit, teach you the movements, and give you the foundation for success in our regular classes. To participate in CrossFit, you will need a Chinook membership. At the end of the Jump Start you should be ready to jump in to the regular CrossFit Classes by purchasing a CrossFit Pass and join the rest of the WSU CrossFit Community! Upon graduation on that Friday of class, if you have attended at least 4 days that week, you will receive your CrossFit shirt, and will be ready to roll your Jump Start experience right in to a CrossFit Pass!

Parents/guardians and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more. Once children can perform basic skills without parental assistance, they may begin independent Preschool courses (ages 4 and 5).All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 30 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. You must be a SRC Member to register for Youth Group Swim Lessons. SRC Members will use their Cougar Card for facility access and the youth will be checked in on a roster for each lesson. Prerequisites: Child must be at least 4 years old. There are no prerequisites for this level. All of our instructors are certified as Water Safety Instructors and teach 30 minute lessons based off the curriculum of the American Red Cross. You must be a SRC Member to register for Youth Group Swim Lessons. SRC Members will use their Cougar Card for facility access and the youth will be checked in on a roster for each lesson. Youth must be supervised directly on the pool deck by their parent/legal guardian during the entire lesson. All youth must have a youth waiver signed by their parent/legal guardian to enter the facility. UREC Lifeguard Skills Screening Prep Clinic

This clinic is designed to help you prepare and practice for the prerequisites of becoming a University Recreation Lifeguard. Lifeguard Instructors will provide feedback and demonstrations on the skills required to pass the prerequisites which include: 1.) Swimming 500 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing in less than 10 minutes. You may use the front crawl or breast stroke. 2.) Treading water for 2 minutes only using the legs. 3.) Brick retrieval: without goggles, swim 20 yards, surface dive 3-5 feet and retrieve a 10lbs brick, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point while keeping both hand on the object and the face at the surface of the water, exit without using ladders or steps. Must be done in 1:10 or less. There are no prerequisites for this course. This clinic is for SRC Members only. Participants must be 18 years or older for this clinic. Fitness Swimming is a structured aquatic program, which is designed to challenge all participants no matter their swimming abilities. Fitness Swimming offers on-deck coaching, with workouts tailored to the group of swimmers participating. Each workout plan will be adapted to each individual swimmer, to help push, challenge and improve each participant’s personal goals. This program is perfect for those wanting to cross train, improve swimming techniques, master skills, training for triathlons and more! Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites, however, all Fitness Swimming participant’s should be able to swim a length of 25 yards using freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke and be able to tread in deep water for at least 1 minute. Refund Policy: A full refund will be given within six days after the start of the class. A 50% refund will be given within seven to thirteen days after the start of the class. Successful participants will be re-certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid for 2 years. ***You will need to bring a copy of your current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification along with a valid government issued form of identification. These items will be verified by the instructor prior to the course starting. We can not submit a course record for your renewed certification without verifying your current certification. Prerequisite: *Minimum age of 15 before the last day of the scheduled class. *Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. CrossFit is broad, general and inclusive fitness that seeks to prepare participants for any physical or unknown contingency. You will work on the foundational movements of CrossFit while increasing your knowledge of fundamental CrossFit exercises and increasing your work capacity.

American Red Cross Blended Learning Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course. The course dates are: Friday - April 13, 2018 - 5:00pm-10:00pm Saturday - April 14, 2018 - 8:00am-5:00pm Sunday - April 15, 2018 - 8:00am-5:00pm The Blended Learning version of the course is designed to be taught in approximately 31 hours. Online time: 7 hours and 24 hours facility time. In order to completely enroll in this course, you must also register at classes.redcross.org with the offering ID that will be provided after your registration and purchase $35 blended learning registration which is not included with this course registration fee. The American Red Cross WSI course is designed to teach candidates the knowledge and skills needed to organize, plan and teach courses in swimming and water safety, including Learn-to-Swim, Parent and Child Aquatics, Basic Water Rescue, and Water Safety Presentations to people of all ages and varying abilities. To enroll in the WSI course, you must be at least 16 years of age before the last scheduled class session. To participate in the WSI course, you must be able to demonstrate the following strokes at a Level 4 ability, meaning you demonstrate effective and efficient strokes and rhythmic breathing for 25 yards: *Front crawl *Back crawl *Sidestroke *Breaststroke *Elementary Backstroke *Butterfly (15 yards ONLY) *Tread water for 1 minute in the deep end *Back float for 1 minute in deep end The skills evaluation will occur on the first day of the course. Please bring a swimsuit and towel for the skills evaluation and for every class. To become certified as a Water Safety Instructor, instructor candidates must: - Successfully complete the Precourse Session - Attend and actively participate in all course sessions - Successfully complete class activities, including the required practice teaching assignments - Score a minimum of 80 percent (40 correct answers out of 50 questions) on the final written exam - Upon successful completion of the WSI course, each participant will receive an American Red Cross universal certificate, which is valid for 2 years, from the date of completion. Lifeguard Prerequisite Prep Clinic

This clinic is designed to help you prepare and practice for the prerequisites of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course. Lifeguard Instructors will provide feedback and demonstrations on the skills required to pass the prerequisites which include: 1.) Swimming 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may use the front crawl or breast stroke. 2.) Treading water for 2 minutes only using the legs. 3.) Brick retrieval: without goggles, swim 20 yards, surface dive 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10lbs brick, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point while keeping both hand on the object and the face at the surface of the water, exit without using ladders or steps. There are no prerequisites for this course. This clinic is for SRC Members only. Participants must be 18 years or older for this clinic. Interested in becoming a lifeguard? Take this American Red Cross certification course now! This course teaches the duties, responsibilities and skills necessary to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Successful participants will be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid. Youth participants, under the age of 18, must complete the youth registration for this course. This registration is for adults who are 18 years or older. Prerequisite: *Minimum age of 15 before the last day of the scheduled class. *Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Participants may use front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. *Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. *Tread water with hands under armpits for 2 minutes. Purchasing the CrossFit membership will allow you to attend an unlimited number of Washington State University CrossFit classes.A Chinook or SRC membership is required to purchase a CrossFit Pass. Pass holders may attend classes in facilities where they are members; SRC members may attend classes at Down Under, and Chinook members may attend classes at the Chinook. The CrossFit pass does not include membership or provide access to facilities for non-members.
