Trips & Clinics

The ORC offers many trips, classes, and clinics each semester to provide you with the opportunity to learn new skills or enhance your knowledge of the great outdoors. Come take an adventure with us, bring your friends, and make some new ones. Check out the options in the sidebar and see where it will take you!

Policies

Members of WSU or the wider community who can meet the physical requirements of a trip and are at least 18 years of age are eligible to participate. WSU students who are 17 years of age or older are also able to participate. Youth, 5-17, are not allowed on regular trips unless there is an exemption.

In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and coordinate transportation logistics, ORC trips are often programmed for small groups (typically up to six participants with two facilitators). Late cancellations can seriously impact our ability to accommodate others and recover costs.

Full refunds will be given for cancellations made two weeks or more prior to the registration deadline. A 50% refund will be given for cancellations made within two weeks prior to the registration deadline. No refunds are given past the registration deadline.

Trip Ratings

The following is a five tiered rating system that includes general descriptions of five levels of difficulties adapted from the American College of Sports Medicine. Certain trips with low technical skill ratings and very high levels of physical requirements could be rated the same as a trip with very high technical skills and a very low physical requirement, so always be sure to inquire as to the specifics of the activity you are participating in. These are general descriptions of the five levels and may differ when applied to specific activities.

Level 1

This activity requires low levels of physical conditioning and no specific experience is necessary, technical skills are not necessary.

Level 2

Good physical conditioning is necessary, little experience is required, and little technical knowledge is necessary.

Level 3

Good physical conditioning is required, some experience is recommended, and some technical knowledge is highly recommended.

Level 4

Good physical condition is required, experience in the specific activity is required, and technical proficiency is highly recommended.

Level 5

Excellent physical conditioning is required, proficiency in specific technical skill is required, and prior experience is a necessity.

Essential Eligibility Criteria for Participation

The wilderness environments of an ORC trip can be remote, dynamic, and challenging. For these reasons, participants should be committed to take responsibility for themselves, and functioning effectively in a group to achieve trip goals. The Essential Eligibility Criteria is applicable for all participants. A qualified person is one who can meet the EEC, with or without appropriate accommodations. Reasonable accommodations are available with adequate notification. Please call Joanne Greene or Jeff Elbracht at 509.335.9668 for accommodation information.

Section 1:

Section 2:

This section lists the EEC specific to different trip types or activities.  All participants must satisfy the EEC listed in section one, and the EEC in section two that is specific to the trip type they are considering.  If you are attending a day trip, you do not need to satisfy the Outdoor Living Skills listed in section one.

If you have questions please contact Callie Metzner at 509.335.2651 or c.metzner@wsu.edu.

You will learn about ice climbing techniques such as safe crampon and ice tool use, belaying, knot tying, basic ice climbing movement, and more! Trip rating is level 2. A belay qualification from the WSU Climbing Wall is required, and good physical conditioning is necessary. For those needing a belay qualification, belay clinics take place most Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays at the SRC climbing wall. Register online for one soon, so you’re not trying to squeeze it into your schedule last-minute. Trip cost includes all necessary climbing and skiing equipment including boots (mountaineering and cross country skiing), crampons, ice tools, harness, helmet, skis and poles, as well as sleeping bags and more. Food and personal clothing is NOT provided on this trip. For entry into Canada, all participants must have a current passport and no DUI/DWI’s on their record. There is a mandatory pre-trip meeting on January 9th from 6:00-8:00pm in the Outdoor Recreation Center lobby. Cancellation Policy: In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and transportation logistics, ORC programs are designed for small groups (typically up to 6 participants with 2 facilitators). Join the ORC on this signature, annual backcountry hut ski trip. Snowboarders, alpine touring/randonee, and telemarkers are all welcome! You will have the opportunity to tour, ski or snowboard, and play in the winter environment (pending weather/avalanche conditions). Friday morning we will drive to Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains, then skin up the steep unmarked trail (1,100 ft climb) to the Wing Ridge Hut where we will be staying for two nights. The Wing Ridge Hut (elev. 7200 ft.) is near the Eagle Cap Wilderness boundary, 2 miles west of the Salt Creek Sno-Park. This hut provides access to pristine mountain basins above the timberline with stunning scenery. The hut includes a wood stove, camp dishes, kitchen supplies, sleeping pads, camp chairs, composting toilet, and more. Trip rating is Level 4. Good physical condition is required, experience in the specific activity is required, and technical proficiency is highly recommended. Trip cost includes: group gear, avalanche beacon, shovel, avalanche probe, camping equipment, transportation, cost of the hut, and trip facilitator(s). Alpine touring skis/split board rentals and food are NOT included. Due to the increased expense of hut rentals, the cost of this trip will go up to $250(member)/$350(non-member) on Dec. 1. There will be a pre-trip meeting on Tuesday January 16, from 6:00-9:00pm in the Outdoor Recreation Center. The pre-trip meeting is mandatory because there is will be an avalanche beacon orientation included. Regular beacon practice and rescue knowledge are necessary in order to be safe in the backcountry. Cancellation Policy: In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and transportation logistics, ORC programs are designed for small groups (typically up to 6 participants with 2 facilitators). Late cancellations can seriously impact our ability to accommodate others and recover costs. • Cancellations made up until 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline will receive a full refund. • Cancellations made within 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline receive 50% refund. • Sorry, no refunds are given past the registration deadline.
