Are Lifeguard Training and Water Safety Instructor taken for credit?

Lifeguard Training and Water Safety Instructor classes offered through UREC are not taken for credit. For credit aquatics courses are available through the College of Education.

Can I sign up for an aquatics class if I am not a student or SRC member?

Those that are not members of the SRC can sign up for Lifeguard Training, Lifeguard Instructor Training and Water Safety Instructor. Swim lessons for adults are available only to SRC members at this time.

Do you offer the new courses with the updated procedures?

We offer American Red Cross certification classes that meet the ECC 2002 guidelines - the most current protocols for first aid/cpr/aed.

How long are my certifications valid?

CPR/AED is valid for 1 year and First Aid is valid for 3 years. As long as you do not let your certification expire, you can complete a refresher course that is much shorter than a full training to renew your certifications. UREC offers multiple refresher courses throughout the year.

I am interested in teaching a class for University Recreation. How can I become involved?

What is AED?

Automated External Defibrillators are specialized medical devices designed to recognize and treat certain lethal heart rhythms in the setting of a cardiac arrest. AEDs have been shown to decrease mortality when used by trained persons and used in conjunction with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
