Proper Steps:

Begin standing with your feet shoulder width apart with a DB at shoulder height
Brace your core by pulling your belly button to your spine with your rib-cage tucked
Set your shoulder blades by pulling them down and together
Drive the DB upward by punching your arm through an imaginary tube above your shoulder, in a "corkscrew" motion, stopping at the top with your bicep beside your ear
Control the DB's descent as you return to the starting position
