Proper Steps:

Travel backward by skipping once off the ball of each foot as you drive upwards with the opposite knee 
Foot strike from the high knee leg should be powerful, land below the hips, and launch your body backwards 
Arm swing should resemble that of a sprint, with hand movement from “cheek to cheek” 
Minimize upward bounce of the torso and hips
Aim to perform as many skips as can be done with proper form in a given distance or period of time
