Proper Steps:

Grip the staff widely with both palms facing down and elbows extended
Create tension by trying to pull the staff apart, snap it in half, and crush it 
Brace your core and tuck your rib-cage down
Slow and with control, move one end of the staff over and back without losing tension or compensating through OTHER joints – other hand should stay in place and only rotate
Go to as far as you can without pain or compensation, then return to starting position
Repeat on the other side
