Proper Steps:

Assume a Half-Kneeling Position with a staff held vertically in the inside hand at the cross section between the rear hip and big toe of the lead foot
Grip the staff as high as you can, and drive it down into the floor
Keeping your lead heel on the ground, squeeze your glutes and drive your lead knee as far over your toes as you can
Hold for a few seconds (or longer) before driving your toes into the ground, pressing your body back into the starting position
