Proper Steps:

Start by holding the staff in front of you at shoulder height with your thumb up
Flip the bottom of the staff up behind your shoulder, and grab it with your other hand
Maintain a vertically upright spine with a braced core
Pull down with your lead hand to drive your shoulder further into extension, going to the point of tension but not pain
