Proper Steps:

Begin upright feet shoulder-width apart, chest up, and with both arms raised overhead
Violently swing arms down and hip hinge while leaning forward and pushing off with your legs
In the air fully extend and upon contact land sturdy with your knees bent (squat), try not to stumble when landing  
Focus on jumping far out rather than up high
