Description

Whether you are hoping to tackle a northwest volcano this summer or add to your repertoire of winter skills, this local trip provides an educational opportunity to develop basic mountaineering skills. In this introductory course, participants will learn basic snow travel techniques, including: kicking steps, rest step, self-belay with ice axe, self-arrest with ice axe, and sitting glissade. This course will not cover glacier travel or crevasse rescue (see our Crevasse Rescue Skills Clinic) . Trip rating is level 2. No experience necessary, good physical conditioning necessary. Beginners and experienced individuals who would like to brush up on skills are encouraged to attend. There will be a pre-trip meeting on February 28th from 6pm-8pm at the Outdoor Recreation Center. At this meeting you will meet your fellow trip participants and trip leaders, see the trip itinerary, and you will have the opportunity to check out group gear and camping equipment. Trip cost includes: group gear, camping equipment, skill instruction, transportation, mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axe, and helmet. Participants need to provide their own hat, gloves, and other clothing. Plan to be in the snow all day and overnight. Dress in synthetic layers and be prepared for a damp, cold environment. No cotton clothing please. Water resistant (or waterproof) outerwear required. Cancellation Policy: In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and transportation logistics, ORC trips are often programmed for small groups (typically up to 6 participants with 2 facilitators). Late cancellations can seriously impact our ability to accommodate others and recover costs. • Cancellations made up until 4 weeks prior to the registration deadline will receive a full refund. • Cancellations made within 4 weeks of the registration deadline receive 50% refund. • Sorry, no refunds are given past the registration deadline. If you need to cancel, please contact urec@wsu.edu. Participants may not be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs during an ORC activity. Drugs and alcohol are not permitted in WSU vehicles/vessels or at campsites (or other accommodations) at any time. Depending on the severity of infraction of rules and policies, a range of disciplinary actions may take place from a verbal warning to removal from activity, contacting local authorities, and the office of student conduct. The Outdoor Recreation Center programs have a minimum participation required for each trip. If the trip or clinic does not have enough participants or faces hazardous weather conditions, the program may be cancelled or subject to change at the discretion of the ORC Coordinator.
