Description

This 3-day instructional climb teaches you some of the basics of glacier mountaineering in a winter environment, including camp set-up, self-arrest, snow anchors, as well as glacier and rope techniques while ascending this beautiful giant of the Cascades. We'll be ascending as high as 10,000 feet of elevation, with an overall ascent height of up to 5,000 feet. While technically in the spring time-frame, this climb will get you exposed to similar conditions and skills needed for winter alpine climbing. We'll take in extravagant views and get up close and personal with the high mountain environment! With a 3:1 climber to facilitator ratio, we offer a very personal experience from seasoned and knowledgeable adventure facilitators. (Please read remainder of the trip description for IMPORTANT information). A certain level of fitness is necessary in order for the group to reach its high camp (8 miles, 4640 feet of elevation gain, and a 10,000+ foot high-point). It’s highly recommended that at the time of the climb, you have the level of fitness to be able to run 5 miles at a 10 minute mile pace (or a comparable equivalent). Due to the tight timeline this trip will be departing no later than 4:00pm on Thursday, April 20th. Please make arrangements so you are able to depart at this time. A mandatory pre-trip meeting will take place at the ORC on April 11th from 6pm-8pm. Pre-Requisite: While no WINTER mountaineering experience is required, experience backcountry winter camping and some formalized/instructed basic mountaineering experience is required. See our Overnight Mountaineering Skills Trips. During the pre-trip meeting participants are required to bring all of their personal clothing and equipment to ensure that all it is appropriate for the program. Trip rating is level 4. This trip will be physically challenging and strenuous; a moderate to high level of fitness is required for this program. While no WINTER mountaineering experience is required, experience backcountry winter camping and some formalized/instructed basic mountaineering experience is required. See our Overnight Mountaineering Skills Trips. Trip cost includes: group gear, transportation, permits, and trip facilitators. Food and clothing are NOT included. Gear requirements for mountaineering are lengthy. The ORC will be providing ropes, harnesses, helmets, headlamps, tents, sleeping bags and other group gear. Appropriate clothing is required and not provided by the Outdoor Recreation Center. Please let us know if this is an issue so we can help in whatever way we can. Cancellation Policy: In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and transportation logistics, ORC trips are often programmed for small groups (typically up to 6 participants with 2 facilitators). Late cancellations can seriously impact our ability to accommodate others and recover costs. • Cancellations made up until 4 weeks prior to the registration deadline will receive a full refund. • Cancellations made within 4 weeks of the registration deadline receive 50% refund. • Sorry, no refunds are given past the registration deadline. If you need to cancel, please email orc@wsu.edu. Participants may not be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs during an ORC activity. Drugs and alcohol are not permitted in WSU vehicles/vessels or at campsites (or other accommodations) at any time. Depending on the severity of infraction of rules and policies, a range of disciplinary actions may take place from a verbal warning to removal from activity, contacting local authorities, and the office of student conduct. The Outdoor Recreation Center programs have a minimum participation required for each trip. If the trip or clinic does not have enough participants or faces hazardous weather conditions, the program may be cancelled or subject to change at the discretion of the ORC Coordinator.
