# Course Description This update course gives currently certified lifeguards or lifeguards with a certification that has been expired for no more than 30 days the opportunity to update skills to the newest American Red Cross Lifeguarding course content and renew certification. Successful participants will be re-certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid for 2 years. Use the Adult Registration to enroll participants who are over the age of 18. **If you are a lifeguard supervisor signing up an employee please be sure to contact Jared Lindorfer at [jared.lindorfer@wsu.edu](jared.lindorfer@wsu.edu) or [509-335-5407](509-335-5407) so that you get all the details that your employee will need.** --- # Materials Needed ==the participant will need to bring a copy of your current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification **along with** a valid government-issued form of identification. Examples of acceptable documents are a current driver's license or passport, birth certificate or social security card, of WSU ID. These items will be verified by the instructor prior to the course start. We can not submit a course record for your renewed certification without verifying your current certification.== --- |Prerequisites| |-| |- ==be currently certified as an American Red Cross Lifeguard or have a certification that has been expired for less than 31 days==| |- minimum age of 15 on or before the last day of the scheduled class| |- swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Participants may use front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.| |- starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object, and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.| |- tread water with hands under armpits for 2 minutes| --- |Certification Requirements| |-| |- attend the entire course |- participate in all skill sessions and scenarios |- demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios |- pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent **^The skill practice sessions will require some strenuous physical activity.
