Description

In this backpacking trip to the Blue Mountains of Oregon, you’ll have three days to explore this beautiful area and learn the skills necessary to comfortably and confidently go backpacking on your own. The Blue Mountains are approximately three hours from campus in Northeastern Oregon, and are home to elk, otters, deer, and an abundance of other wildlife, making this area one of the top sites in the region for outdoor recreation! By traveling in small groups of about six participants and two leaders, you will work as a team, hiking and camping in a new location each day. Learn backcountry camp skills such as how to purify your drinking water, cook on a backpacking stove, and how to hike and camp utilizing “Leave No Trace” traveling and camping techniques to preserve the environment for future generations. Trip rating is level 2. Good physical conditioning is needed, no experience necessary. Participants can expect to hike anywhere between 3-12 miles per day with an overnight backpack on. The mandatory pre-trip meeting will take place October 10th from 6:00-8:00pm at the Outdoor Recreation Center. The trip cost includes equipment, transportation, permits, and trip leader (Food is NOT included). Participants may not be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs during an ORC activity. Drugs and alcohol are not permitted in WSU vehicles/vessels or at campsites (or other accommodations) at any time. Depending on the severity of infraction of rules and policies, a range of disciplinary actions may take place from a verbal warning to removal from activity, contacting local authorities, and the office of student conduct. Cancellation Policy: In order to minimize our environmental impact, maintain facilitator-to-participant ratios, meet permit criteria, and transportation logistics, ORC trips are often programmed for small groups (typically up to 6 participants with 2 facilitators). Late cancellations can seriously impact our ability to accommodate others and recover costs. • Cancellations made up until 4 weeks prior to the registration deadline will receive a full refund. • Cancellations made within 4 weeks of the registration deadline receive 50% refund. • Sorry, no refunds are given past the registration deadline. If you need to cancel, please email urec@wsu.edu. The Outdoor Recreation Center programs have a minimum participation required for each trip. If the trip or clinic does not have enough participants or faces hazardous weather conditions, the program may be cancelled or subject to change at the discretion of the ORC Coordinator.
