Become an Instructor!

Are you interested in becoming a UREC Group Fitness Instructor? Our Fitness Instructor Training (FIT) process can be your the first step to teaching group classes and inspiring active, healthy living. FIT is a combination of lecture and practical application that cover the basics of group fitness instruction.

We are only accepting WSU students at this time.

Even after successful completion of a national certification or in-house training at UREC, we still require prospective instructors to undergo our FIT Course. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions.

FIT 2-Day Course

We focus on individual and team-based practice and provide one-on-one guidance!

Topics for the weekend include:

  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Exercise Selection
  • Cueing Layers
  • Coaching Principles
  • Inclusive Strategies
  • Risk Management...and much more!

Paid Apprenticeship

We pair students with a mentor in a fitness class that matches their format interests!

After successfully completing the weekend 2-Day Course, students will proceed to an apprenticeship portion meant to prepare them for their auditions.

The process involves further shadowing/observation, practice, and co-teaching with their mentors - and students get paid at minimum wage! Timing is dependent on Apprentice progress and needs.

Upon passing their auditions, students receive a wage rate increase and officially become Group Fitness Instructors. Depending on national certification status, pay rates may differ.

In-House Training

As continuing education and instructor development is important to us and our team, students also undergo in-house training, paid. In-house training covers format-specific knowledge and skills and further prepares students for class planning, equipment use, and instruction. If students are interested in teaching more than one format, they will have to attend multiple trainings and complete an audition for each one. Available in-house trainings include:

  • Functional & Circuit Training
  • Instructional Dance
  • Kickboxing
  • Mobility & Flexibility
  • Pole Fit
  • Spin & Coug Cycle
  • Yoga
