Description

Here you will learn the fundamentals of whitewater kayaking, and be able to run a class II-III river. Learn how to roll, learn how to surf, and of course, learn how to rescue your fellow kayaker. This will be a one day trip on the Spokane River (the field day will return to Pullman around 5-6pm) where the class will learn to navigate the river environment in class II conditions. The Trip rating is level 3. While this is an intro course, whitewater kayaking is a difficult activity with many risk factors associated to the dynamic river environment. This course will be challenging; however, the goal is to provide each student with the necessary skills to navigate a whitewater river. Trip cost includes: transportation, kayak rental, and a trip leader (Food is NOT included, so bring snacks, a lunch, and water). There is a mandatory pre-trip with a pool session for this course on Tuesday April 25th from 6-10:30pm. We will met at the ORC lobby to discuss the class and will then move to Gibb pool to go over self rescue techniques required prior to entering a moving river. In preparation for this course it is also highly recommended that you attend one of our Kayak Roll Clinics. The skills we teach in these clinics translate perfectly to advancing your whitewater kayaking skills. Late cancellations can seriously impact our ability to accommodate others and recover costs. • Cancellations made up until 4 weeks prior to the registration deadline will receive a full refund. • Cancellations made within 4 weeks of the registration deadline receive 50% refund. • Sorry, no refunds are given past the registration deadline. If you need to cancel, please email orc@wsu.edu. Participants may not be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs during an ORC activity. Drugs and alcohol are not permitted in WSU vehicles/vessels or at campsites (or other accommodations) at any time. Depending on the severity of infraction of rules and policies, a range of disciplinary actions may take place from a verbal warning to removal from activity, contacting local authorities, and the office of student conduct. The Outdoor Recreation Center programs have a minimum participation required for each trip. If the trip or clinic does not have enough participants or faces hazardous weather conditions, the program may be cancelled or subject to change at the discretion of the ORC Coordinator.
